PERFORMANCE BASED GEAR METROLOGY
This book, by Dr. William D. Mark, was published in 2013 with the assistance of a grant from the AGMA Foundation. Dr. Mark’s book explores how manufacturing deviations and other irregularities on gear teeth contribute to vibration excitation and noise. The book is available from Amazon.
OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY REPORT
In 2004, Ohio State University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering received a $39,870 grant from the AGMA Foundation to conduct a research project entitled, “Development of a Generalized Mechanical Efficiency Prediction Methodology for Gear Pairs.”
OSU presented results of the project at the 2005 Fall Technical Meeting in a paper entitled, “A Model to Predict Friction Losses of Face-Hobbed Hypoid Gears.” To obtain a copy, e-mail the Foundation at foundation@agma.org
AACHEN REPORT
In 2003, Aachen University in Germany received a $34,500 grant from the AGMA Foundation for research on PVD coatings and gear life.
The first results of this research were presented in the Summer 2004 issue of Gear Industry Journal.
GRI VISION REPORT
In 2004, the AGMA Foundation awarded a grant to the Gear Research Institute to convene a meeting of the top minds in the gear industry for the purpose of developing a report outlining the future of gear manufacturing. To obtain a copy, please email the Foundation at foundation@agma.org
UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE REPORT
In 2007, the AGMA Foundation awarded a grant to the University of Tennessee for examining “In-situ Measurement of Stresses in Carburized Gears via Neutron Diffraction.” The study demonstrated that neutron diffraction methods have the potential to measure both the residual and operating stresses in gears. The data for statically loaded gears had sufficient resolution to show changes in d-spacing in the carburized layer as a function of tooth load.
